When Life Gets Hard: Remembering the Goodness of God

Life moves fast. Between work, family, and the weight of everyday struggles, it is easy to forget how far God has brought us. But even in the middle of difficulty, there is a God who specializes in making impossibilities into possibilities. Here is a reminder of why gratitude, faith, and trust in God matter more than ever.

Why Do We Forget What God Has Done for Us?

We live in a world full of distractions. Phones, jobs, family demands, and the constant noise of life pull our attention away from the One who has carried us through every hard season.

It is not that we stop believing. We just stop remembering. And when we stop remembering, we stop thanking Him. When we stop thanking Him, our faith begins to feel distant.

The challenge is simple but powerful: take time every single day to think about the goodness of God. Not just in the big moments, but in the small ones too.

What Does It Mean to Thank God for the Little Things?

We tend to reserve our praise for the dramatic miracles. The healed diagnosis. The job that came through at the last minute. The relationship that was restored. But God is working in the small moments too, and those deserve our gratitude just as much.

A tire that held long enough to reach a gas station. A stranger who walked into your path at exactly the right moment. A conversation that reminded you of God's faithfulness. These are not coincidences. These are God choosing to remain present in the details of your life.

One way to build this habit is to begin each morning with a prayer of thankfulness before your feet even hit the floor. It does not have to be long. Even a minute or two of raising your hands and thanking God for the day ahead can shift the entire posture of your heart.

How Do You Keep Trusting God When Life Does Not Make Sense?

The Apostle Paul knew suffering in a way most of us will never experience. In 2 Corinthians 11:24-28, he writes:

"From the Jews five times I received forty stripes minus one. Three times I was beaten with rods; once I was stoned; three times I was shipwrecked; a night and a day I have been in the deep; in journeys often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils of my own countrymen, in perils of the Gentiles, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren; in weariness and toil, in sleeplessness often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness; besides the other things, what comes upon me daily: my deep concern for all the churches." - 2 Corinthians 11:24-28 New King James Version (NKJV)

And yet Paul kept going. He kept preaching. He kept trusting.

Job said it this way: "Though He slay me, yet will I trust Him." - Job 13:15 New King James Version (NKJV)

That is the kind of faith that does not depend on circumstances. It is a faith that says, "I do not understand what you are doing, God, but I know you are doing something."

What Happens When You Step Out in Faith Even When You Are Not Sure?

Faith is not the absence of uncertainty. It is moving forward anyway.

Think about the Israelites standing at the edge of the Red Sea. The water was roaring. There was no visible way through. But the moment they stepped in, God parted it. That is how He works. He does not always show you the full path before He asks you to take the first step.

The only limits God has are the limits we place on Him. When we choose worry over worship, when we choose doubt over declaration, we close the door on what He is trying to do. But when we step out, even with shaking knees, He meets us there.

Can God Really Use Someone Like Me?

Yes. Absolutely yes.

It does not matter if you have been in prison. It does not matter if you have struggled with addiction, walked away from the church, or made choices you deeply regret. It does not matter if you are 20 or 92. God has a purpose for your life, and that purpose does not expire.

The testimonies of people who have walked through the darkest valleys and come out worshipping on the other side are proof that God is still in the business of restoration. He is not looking for perfect people. He is looking for willing ones.

How Do You Carry the Church With You Into Everyday Life?

Ministry does not stop when the service ends. Every room you walk into, every conversation you have, every situation you face is an opportunity to carry the presence of God with you.

You do not always have to say a word. Sometimes the Holy Ghost does the work before you open your mouth. People feel something different when they are around someone who genuinely carries the presence of God. And when they ask what it is, that is your open door.

Even in a very dark world, a very dim light shines very, very bright. Do not underestimate what God can do through your simple, consistent, faithful presence in the lives of the people around you.

What About the Prayers That Have Not Been Answered Yet?

Maybe you have been praying for a family member for years. Maybe the diagnosis has not changed. Maybe the situation looks worse, not better. What do you do with that?

You speak faith when reality slaps you in the face with the exact opposite of what you expected. You say, "God, you made me a promise, and I am holding onto it." You keep calling their names out in prayer. You keep living the gospel in front of them. You keep showing them what it looks like to trust God even when it is hard.

God's ways are not our ways. His thoughts are higher than our thoughts. The valleys we walk through will put us in contact with people we never would have reached otherwise. Nothing is wasted in His hands.

Getting Back to Real Relationship With God

There is a difference between going through the motions of faith and actually living in relationship with the King of Kings. When we get back to real relationship with Him, we begin to see the kinds of miracles that used to seem rare become part of everyday life again.

That starts with worship. Real worship. Not a performance, but a genuine turning of the heart toward God and saying, "You are worthy of all of this. You have done too much for me to stay silent."

When you think about the goodness of the Lord, how He saved you, how He raised you, how He filled you with the Holy Ghost, how He healed you, it changes everything. It changes how you pray. It changes how you speak. It changes how you face the next hard thing that comes your way.

Life Application

This week, make a deliberate decision to remember and declare the goodness of God every single day. Before you get out of bed in the morning, take one or two minutes to thank Him. Not for what you are hoping He will do, but for what He has already done. Think about the Red Seas He has parted in your life. Think about the moments He showed up when you had nothing left. Write them down if you need to.

Then carry that gratitude with you into every room you walk into. Let it change how you talk to your coworkers, your family, and the strangers you meet. Let the presence of God on your life be something people notice before you ever say a word.

Ask yourself these questions as you go through the week:

  • When was the last time I genuinely thanked God for the small, everyday ways He has shown up in my life?
  • Am I placing limits on what God can do by choosing worry or doubt over faith and worship?
  • Is there someone in my life I have been praying for who needs me to keep speaking faith out loud, even when the situation looks impossible?
  • Am I carrying the presence of God with me into the everyday spaces of my life, or do I leave Him at the church door?

God is not done writing your story. He is not done with your family. He is not done with your situation. He does all things well, and He is still doing them today.
