The Power of Resurrection: When God Interrupts Our Plans

Easter reminds us that God specializes in interrupting our carefully laid plans with something far greater than we could imagine. Throughout Scripture, we see God stepping into impossible situations and bringing life where there was only death.

What Does It Mean to Take on God's Name?

When we are baptized in Jesus' name, we take on His identity. Just as Dr. Joseph Harutunian refused to change his Armenian name because it meant "resurrection," we should never be ashamed of carrying Christ's name. His grandfather was called "Resurrection," and he declared he would be known all his life as the grandson of the Resurrection.

When you're baptized in Jesus' name, you're no longer just your old self. The Word of God says, "Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new" - 2 Corinthians 5:17 (KJV). You become a child of the King, born again with a new identity in Christ.

How Does God Work Miracles Through Great Problems?

The widow in 1 Kings 17 faced an impossible situation. She had only enough meal and oil for one last cake before she and her son would starve. When Elijah asked her to feed him first, it seemed unreasonable - even offensive by today's standards.

But she obeyed, and God multiplied her resources. For months, she reached into her container and found enough meal, poured out enough oil. You never really get great miracles until you have great problems. Sometimes the very problem you're wrestling with - whether it's with God, the church, or living for Christ - might be exactly what God wants to solve miraculously.

When Miracles Seem to Fail

After months of miraculous provision, the widow's son died. How heartbreaking this must have been! But she didn't give up. She went to the prophet and refused to leave without him. She said, "I'm not letting go of your foot unless you go with me."

Elijah laid on the child face to face, hand to hand, and prayed. When nothing happened immediately, he got up, walked around praying, then returned and laid on the child again. God raised that boy back to life.

What Other Resurrections Are Recorded in Scripture?

The Bible records multiple resurrections, showing God's power over death:

  • The Shunammite woman's son (2 Kings 4:18-37)
  • The man who touched Elisha's bones (2 Kings 13:20-21)
  • The widow's son at Nain (Luke 7:11-17)
  • Jairus's daughter (Mark 5:21-43)

In one remarkable account, a dead man was hastily thrown into Elisha's tomb during a battle. When the body touched Elisha's bones, the man came back to life, tore off his grave clothes, and joined the battle. God had promised Elisha double the miracles of Elijah, and He kept that promise even after death.

How Does Jesus Interrupt Our Plans?

When Jesus encountered the funeral procession for the widow's son at Nain, He stopped their carefully planned burial. They were convinced it was over - time to put the boy in the ground and spend the rest of life brokenhearted. But Jesus interrupted their plan and said, "Time for you to get up."

Similarly, when Jairus came seeking healing for his sick daughter, a messenger arrived saying, "Don't bother Jesus anymore - your daughter is dead." But Jesus said, "Don't worry, trust me, I know what I'm doing."

At the house, paid mourners were crying and carrying on. When Jesus said the child was just sleeping, they laughed at Him. These religious people were lecturing Jesus on what He could and couldn't do. Sound familiar?

The Simplicity of God's Power

Jesus didn't pray a 1,200-word theological prayer. He simply said, "Little girl, get up." Why? Because He is the Lord who gives life, re-gives life, and gives new life. He can fill us with His Spirit so we can walk in newness of life with a transformed mind.

Why Can't We Figure Out God's Ways?

Our human minds are limited and often get in the way. We want to know how, why, when, and where. But God's ways are higher than our ways, and His thoughts higher than our thoughts. If God can throw a dead body on dead bones and bring life, how are we going to figure out His methods?

Many people say, "I'll come to church when I get my problems worked out." But you can't figure it all out by yourself. What you need is to be forgiven of sin, have your heart and mind washed by the blood of the Lamb, and turn your life over to Christ.

What Does the Resurrection Mean for Us Today?

When Jesus hung on the cross, He said, "It is finished." This phrase can mean the enemy is destroyed, the punishment is complete, or the price is paid in full. Jesus paid the price for our sins - the battle can be over, and we win.

They put Him in a tomb with guards, thinking this would stop His followers from stealing the body. But on Sunday morning, there was light, angels, and Jesus walked out alive. Even His disciples didn't expect resurrection - the women came to wash His body, expecting to find it cold and bloody.

The Birth of the Church

Fifty days after the resurrection, on the Day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit fell in the upper room. "And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance" - Acts 2:4 (KJV). This was the birth of the church.

Peter preached clearly: "Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost"- Acts 2:38 (KJV).

Life Application

God wants to interrupt your plans with His resurrection power. Stop trying to figure everything out with your limited understanding and trust in His unlimited ability. This week, identify one area where you've been relying on your own wisdom instead of God's power. Surrender that situation to Him and watch Him work in ways you never imagined.

Ask yourself these questions:

  • What "impossible" situation in my life needs God's resurrection power?
  • Am I trying to work out my problems before coming to God, or am I bringing them to Him first?
  • How can I stop limiting God with my human understanding and start trusting His unlimited power?
  • What would change in my life if I truly believed God can do "exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think"?

The same God who raised Jesus from the dead wants to bring new life to every dead area of your existence. Don't let your plans get in the way of His miracles.
