When You Can't See Through the Clouds: Trusting God's Voice to Guide You Home

Life has a way of putting us in situations where we can't see clearly, where the storm around us is louder than the direction we need to go. The question is: whose voice are you trusting when visibility drops to zero?

A Story About a Plane, a Pilot, and a Voice From the Tower

A businessman in Alaska accepted a ride from a pastor flying a small Cessna. It seemed like a reasonable decision. The pastor seemed trustworthy. But once they were airborne, the clouds rolled in, and the pastor passed out. He had a condition that caused him to lose consciousness in cloud cover.

Suddenly, two men with no flying experience were alone in a small plane, surrounded by clouds, with mountains they couldn't see.

They grabbed the radio and called for help. Eventually, a voice came through from Anchorage. A pilot had found them on radar and said something that changed everything:

"I see you. I know where you are. I know what's ahead of you. If you listen to me, I will guide you home. But you must do one thing: do not let the storm make your decisions for you."

He warned them about storms ahead. He told them not to react to the turbulence. He guided them through every turn, every degree of adjustment, every moment of uncertainty. And they landed safely.

What Happens When You Trust Your Feelings Instead of Your Instruments

There is a well-known tragedy involving a pilot who flew his plane into the ocean near New York because he got caught in a cloud bank. His instruments were telling him the truth. He was descending. He was in danger. But he trusted how he felt over what the instruments said, and it cost him his life.

This is one of the most dangerous things a person can do, in the air or in life.

When you lose your horizon, when there is nothing visible to measure yourself against, your senses will lie to you. You will feel level when you are diving. You will feel confident when you are off course.

The same is true in spiritual life. When you are in the middle of a storm, your emotions are not a reliable guide. Fear, confusion, and pressure will tell you things that simply are not true.

What Does the Bible Say About Trusting God Over Your Own Understanding?

Proverbs 3:5-6 says it plainly:

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths." - Proverbs 3:5-6 New King James Version (NKJV)

This is not a suggestion for easy days. This is a command for the cloudy ones. Lean not to your own understanding. Do not trust your emotions when you cannot see clearly. Trust the One who can see everything.

Isaiah 30:21 adds this promise:

"Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, 'This is the way, walk in it,' whenever you turn to the right hand or whenever you turn to the left." - Isaiah 30:21 New King James Version (NKJV)

God is not silent. He is speaking. The question is whether we are on the right channel to hear Him.

How Do You Know It Is the Voice of God?

This is one of the most common questions people ask about hearing from God. Here is a foundational answer: the Spirit of God will never contradict the Word of God.

The Bible is described as the sword of the Spirit. It is God speaking to us. If what you are hearing lines up with Scripture, if it aligns with His character and His promises, you can trust it. If it contradicts the Word, it is not His voice.

John 10:27 gives us this assurance directly from Jesus:

"My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me." - John 10:27 New King James Version (NKJV)

God knows you. He sees you. He is not distant or unaware of what you are flying through right now.

God Sees You Even When You Cannot See Him

Radar is invisible. You cannot see it, touch it, taste it, or feel it. And yet it can locate a plane from hundreds of miles away with pinpoint accuracy. It knows the altitude, the direction, and the speed.

We believe in radar without question. But the moment we cannot feel God's presence, we assume He has left us.

Your feelings do not determine whether God is with you. His Word does. And His Word says He will never leave you or forsake you. He sees you in the cloud. He knows your altitude. He knows what is ahead of you, even when you cannot.

God Wants to Speak Through You, Not Just to You

There is a story of a man in the Everglades who felt God tell Him to stand on the hood of His Jeep and pray in tongues. It seemed unusual. It felt strange. But he obeyed. And out of the brush walked a man who told him that he had been speaking in his native language, a rare dialect, calling him to God.

There is also the story of a young girl in Hong Kong who received the Holy Ghost and, while praying for her friend, began speaking in a dialect spoken by only about 100,000 people in the world. Her friend heard her own native language declaring that God wanted to fill her with His Spirit.

These are not coincidences. These are examples of what happens when someone surrenders to the voice of God and allows Him to move through them.

God does not just want to speak to you. He wants to speak through you.

Why God Cannot Be Your Co-Pilot

There is an old saying that used to appear on bumper stickers: "God is my co-pilot." It sounds humble, but it misses the point entirely.

A co-pilot advises. A co-pilot suggests. A co-pilot looks at the map and offers an opinion. That is not the role God is meant to play in your life.

He is meant to be in control. He is meant to be the one guiding every turn, every degree of adjustment, every decision. When you try to fly the plane yourself because of your wealth, your intelligence, or your own ability, you are taking on a responsibility you were never meant to carry alone.

Paul and Silas understood this. Beaten wrongly, accused falsely, thrown into prison, they did not try to reason their way out or rely on their own strength. They worshiped. They trusted that God saw them, knew exactly where they were, and was still in control.

Prayer and Fasting: Getting on the Right Channel

If you are struggling to hear God's voice, consider whether you are tuned to the right frequency. A radio cannot receive a signal it is not tuned to receive.

Prayer and fasting are not religious rituals. They are the disciplines that tune your Spirit to hear from God. They quiet the noise of the world and position you to receive what He is already saying.

The more you practice hearing from God, the easier it becomes. The more you respond when He speaks, the more clearly you will hear Him the next time.

Life Application

This week, identify one area of your life where you have been trusting your own feelings or understanding over God's Word and His voice. It might be a relationship, a financial decision, a fear you have been carrying, or a direction you have been unsure about.

Make a deliberate choice to stop letting the storm make your decisions. Spend intentional time in prayer this week, not just asking God for things, but listening. Open your Bible and let His Word speak into that specific situation.

Then, when He speaks, do what He says.

Ask yourself these questions:

• Am I trusting how I feel about my situation, or am I trusting what God's Word says about it?
• Is God truly in control of my life, or have I only given Him the co-pilot seat?
• Am I positioned through prayer and time in the Word to hear His voice clearly?
• Is there someone in my life that God may want to speak to through me, and am I open to that?

God sees you. He knows exactly where you are and what is ahead of you. You do not have to navigate the clouds alone. Trust the voice from the tower, and He will guide you home.
